The Department offers complex services in the area of evaluation of paper and cardboard, particularly from the point of view of their properties in printing:

  • evaluation of printing properties: acceptance of printing ink, penetration of print, time of drying of printing inks, rate of penetration of printing ink, striking-through of printing ink, surface strength ...

  •  evaluation of surface and structural properties: whiteness, opacity, smoothness, porosity, permeability, dusting of paper, KN test ...

  • evaluation of strength and physical properties: tensile strength, bursting strength, bending strength, Elmendorf strength, size test, pH, ash content ...

  • evaluation of barrier properties of simple and modified paper and cardboard against vapours of water and organic solvents ...

The Department has at its disposal original methods for determination and evaluation of fibrous papermaking suspensions related to their paper-forming ability as well as to the properties and behaviour of wet and dry paper.

These measurements include:

  • content of colloid harmful resin – a method for determination of concentration of harmful resin in colloidal form present in recycling waters (the method is based on the enormous sorption ability of specially activated pulp, showing the so-called surface flocculation of anion-active particles of harmful resins at the surface of such activated material)

  • rheo-sedimentation – the method is designed for characterisation of bonding and paper-forming abilities of fibrous components forming a papermaking suspension

  • CCD and g – (the so-called critical degree of dilution and the hydration factor) they are parameters enabling characterisation of effect of aqueous medium upon formation and character of hydration bonding system (which is responsible for formation and behaviour of super-molecular structures between fibrous and non-fibrous components forming the papermaking suspension)

  • distribution of sizes of open pores and holes in paper and similar porous materials with help of pneumatic and the so-called bubble methods (the methods enable determination of distribution of open through-flow pores and holes of porous materials)

  • distribution of sizes of pores in all porous materials with help of hygroscopicity kinetics, which enables besides determination of size distribution of all pores also determination of molecular-surface properties of pore walls

  • molecular-surface properties of films, coatings etc. with help of drop method
