The present invention relates to a process for preparing fibers based on hyaluronic acid wherein the preparation process is characterized in that first there is prepared a spinning solution of hyaluronic acid and/or metallic compound thereof optionally containing a metal salt or a compound of hyaluronic acid and metallic ions, further said spinning solution is introduced into a coagulation bath containing an acid, an alcohol and at the most 10 percent by weight of water, and optionally a metal salt, to obtain a fiber which is preferably let to mature in the coagulation bath and/or the fiber is drawn.
