eng Physico-chemical aspects of renewal of the electrodes based on mercury or amalgams Electrodes based on mercury or amalgams represent a very useful tool for voltammetric trace analysis as well as study of bioactive species. Recent development in the field of stationary mercury-based electrodes has brought suggestion of numerous new types of useful designs and applications concerning, e.g., the miniaturized electromechanically renewed hanging (stationary) mercury drop electrodes HMDE/SMDE and the mercury modified solid amalgam (incl. composite amalgam and plastic-tip or glass-tip) electrodes. In principal an electro-chemical renewal of the HMDE-surface could eliminate a respective mechanical irreproducibility of its size. Therefore, a combination of the mechanical and purely electrochemical renewal of the electrode surface of HMDE seems to be useful for many electroanalytical applications. It is supported by the adequate physico-chemical reasons and interpretation of corresponding interfacial behavior of present species. electrochemically renewed electrodes; mercury, amalgams
