eng The Effect of Pre-conditioning on the Nanostructure and Properties of Polymer Layered Silicate Nanocomposites Based upon Epoxy Resin The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effect of pre-conditioning on the cure kinetics and the nanostructure and properties of polymer layered silicate nanocomposites based upon epoxy resin. Two different resins of DGEBA type were used: DER 331 and DER 332 (Dow Chemical Company), differing in their viscosities and epoxy equivalents. The nanoclay was an organically modified montmorillonite (Nanomer I.30E, Nanocor Inc.), and was mixed with the resin in a 5 wt% concentration by simple or solvent mixing methods. The cross-linking agent was a polyetheramine, Jeffamine D-230 (Huntsman). The resin/clay mixtures were pre-conditioned by placing them in thermostatic baths at room temperature, 60ºC, 80ºC and 100ºC for various periods of time. After pre-conditioning for selected times at each temperature, the stoichiometric amount of diamine was added according to the measured epoxy equivalent, and the sample was then cured. The cured samples were tested by DMA and the kinetics of curing was studied using DSC. The value of epoxy equivalent (EE) changes linearly with Tg during pre-conditioning.
