eng	GC/MS and FAB/MS Analysis of Lipids Composition for Taxonomic classification of Microorganisms	Infectious diseases originating from contamination of food and beverages are common, distressing, and sometimes life-threatening problems for millions of people around the world. There is an urgent need for technology, which would allow detection of microorganisms in real time using a universal detector, which would be applicable to the detection, identification and quantification of a wide range of microorganisms. Development of new analytical instrumentation in the field of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry (MS) offers a suitable solution for overcoming some of the challenges associated with analysis. Each HPLC or MS peak represents a chemical component or a fragment of the component, providing a ?fingerprint? of the chemical composition of analyzed material. Peaks that are characteristic of a specific genus or species (biomarkers) are then used for taxonomic purposes. The microorganisms of interest in this project are Listeria spp. and Archobacter spp. Listeria monocytogenes is a food born pathogen that causes human listeriosis. Genus Arcobacter includes aerotolerant campylobacter-like bacteria; Arcobacter butzleri and Arcobacter cryaerophilus were associated with human diarrhea and possibly septicemia. We have employed both HPLC in combination with fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry (FAB/MS) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) in order to define genera and species characteristic biomarkers. Results from HPLC (phospholipid profiles) and GC/MS (fatty acids profiles) and FAB/MS (lipid membrane profiles) were complimentary; each technique is suitable for taxonomical classification by itself. The differences in all profiles were visually significant as a fingerprint between each of the bacterial species studie.	GC/MS; FAB/MS; HPLC; fatty acids; identification of mikroorganisms
