eng Optimization of Separation Conditions for Polar Compounds in HILIC This work investigates separation of polar compounds on a zwitterionic polymethacrylate monolithic capillary column showing dual HILIC-RP retention. The monolithic column was prepared by “in-situ” radical polymerization of [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]-dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl)-ammonium hydroxide (monomer) and ethylene dimethacrylate (cross-linker) in a fused-silica capillary using aqueous-organic porogen solvent mixture. The experiments were carried out at the flow rate in the range 3–20 μl.min-1, according to the actual composition of the mobile phase and the capillary column was connected to UVdetector. To find optimum separation conditions, the temperature was varied from 30°C to 80°C and the concentration of ammonium acetate was changed in the range 10–50 mmol.l-1. The monolithic column shows dual HILIC-RP mechanism, therefore isocratic and gradient separations were optimized also in RP-mode. Optimized separation in alternating HILIC - RP modes were applied to the analyse of beer sample.
