eng Effect of the Surface Roughness on the Surface Free Energy of Coated Papers The surface properties of two sets of coated printing papers were studied by monitoring the dynamic behaviour of a small drop of a standard liquid (water, ethylene glycol, formamide and methylene iodide) in the time region of 20 s after the impact of the drop on the solid surface (the “sessile“ drop method). The contact angle, formed by the liquid drop at the three-phase boundary, is a quantitative measure of the wetting of a solid by a liquid. The usual aim of contact angle measurement is the calculation of the surface free energy (SFE) of the solid, using semi-empirical equations including the estimation of interfacial interaction between the liquid and the solid phases. Using the “cos theta model”, published in (1-4), the pseudo-equilibrium contact angle, the liquid spreading rate k1 and the rate of liquid penetration k2 were evaluated. The surface roughness was measured by a profilometer and by the Parker Print-SurfTM instrument.
