eng Alpha-amino acids as precursors in the synthesis of optically active benzo[d]imidazoles As a continuation of our recent research on optically active imidazole derivatives,1-3 a five step reaction sequence leading to the synthesis of new alpha-amino acid-derived benzimidazoles has been developed. In the present study, a series of novel benzo[d]imidazole derivatives was synthesized. Commercially available and inexpensive essential alpha-amino acids were chosen as a source of chirality to make the entire synthesis low-cost. The alpha-amino acids such as L-Ala, D-Ala, L,D-Ala, L-Leu, L-iLeu, L-Phe, L-Val, and L-Pro were utilized in this reaction (Scheme1). These optically active molecules can be utilized as precursors for the construction of higher heterocyclic systems or can directly be employed as nitrogen ligands in a selected asymmetric reaction. alpha-AMINO ACIDS; BENZOdIMIDAZOLES; LIGANDS
