eng IMIDAZOLIUM BASED DONOR-ACCEPTOR CHROMOPHORES In recent years, we have shown that imidazole-derived push-pull compounds possess very interesting linear as well as nonlinear optical properties. One of the possibilities how enhance the electron withdrawing character of the imidazole, is its quaternization. Hence, we report herein design, synthesis and properties of imidazolium based donor-acceptor chromophores. Our synthetic approach starts from commercially available 4,5-diphenylimidazole and its bromination and subsequent N-methylation. With 2-bromo-1-methyl-4,5-diphenylimidazole in hand we can perform different cross-coupling reactions towards chromophores with extended p-conjugated length. Final step involves quaternization of the imidazole derivatives to charged imidazolium salts. Push-Pull Chromophores, Imidazolium, Phenyl, Absorption, Fluorescence
