eng Multielemental determination of liquid micro-samples by oaTOF-ICP-MS with linear pump sample introduction system Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is widely utilized technique for determination of various elements. In general alignment the ICP-MS included peristaltic pump, pneumatic nebulizer and spray chamber for transport of liquid samples to the plasma. However the ordinary sample transport setup is not sufficient enough to treat low volume samples. In many fields, such as forensic, biological, archeometric and clinical analysis the sample volume is the limiting factor. Especially multielemental determination of such samples is still very difficult and challenging task. Typical time of determination of 60 isotopes (when the isotopic ratios must be preserved) by quadrupole mass spectrometers is about 12 minutes. This period presents roughly 5 millilitres of sample. Difficulty of analysis of sub-millilitre samples by common quadrupole system can be overcome by micro-nebulizers. However micro-nebulizers suffer from clogging and the time of the analysis is prolonged due to increase in wash-out time. Possible solution of multielmental determination of low volume samples is to use simultaneous or quasi-simultaneous mass spectrometers. Such systems represent time-of-flight mass spectrometers where the sample consumption is lower of 1 millilitre independently on the number of isotopes determined. Nevertheless to deal with samples of volume lower of 0.5 millilitres is still problematic. In our work, we replaced regular peristaltic pump by linear syringe pump connected directly to the nebulizer to better treat low volume samples. Such connection brings shorter sample way and eliminates pulsation in aerosol formation occurring when the peristaltic pump is involved. Simultaneous capabilities of time-of-flight mass spectrometry used play crucial role in sample throughput and consumption and also enable very precise measurement of isotopic ratios. micro-samples; oaTO-ICP-MS; sample introduction system
