eng Determination of fatty alcohol ethoxylate surfactants in river water Surfactants based on fatty alcohol ethoxylates are a group of non-ionic surfactants widely used in laundry detergents and to a lesser extent in household cleaners, institutional and industrial cleaners, cosmetics, agriculture, and in textile, paper, oil and other process industries. It was reported that approximately 300 000 tonnes p.a. of alcohol ethoxylates are sold for household use and additional 80 000 tonnes p.a. are used for other applications. [1]. For determination of these surfactants in environment, liquid chromatography is the most frequently used technique which allows to separate the complex sample of surfactant with dual distribution of oligomers according to the length of carbon skeleton and the degree of ethoxylation. When photometric detection is used, suitable derivatives of ethoxylates are prepared for their detection by UV or fluorescence detector. The LC-MS technique brings an advantage of direct identification of each oligomer of the surfactant in the sample. Besides of LC methods, electromigration methods, especially MEKC, can be used for analyses of samples containing non-ionic surfactants. [2]. In this work, liquid chromatography method with the SPE preconcentration step and consecutive pre-column derivatisation with phenylisothiocyanate is used for the determination of C12 – C16 fatty alcohol ethoxylates in river water samples. The method is developed with emphasis on optimization of the SPE step and the derivatisation conditions. Final method with baseline separation of C12 – C16 fatty alcohol ethoxylates with the number of EO units between 0 and 12 is applied on real samples. Qualitative and quantitative results of analyses are discussed.
