eng Asymmetric Flow Field Fractionation of Core-Shell Copolymers Asymmetric flow field flow fractionation (AF4) combined with a multi-angle light scattering detector (MALS) has been shown as an efficient analytical tool for the characterization of molecular structure of acrylic copolymers prepared by emulsion polymerization. The study focuses on novel core-shell copolymers with a highly dense core cross-linked with allyl methacrylate. Cross-linking the latex core results in enhanced mechanical properties of the paint binders. It was shown that AF4 allows baseline separation of soluble macromolecules from the cross-linked core, quantification of the two species based on the RI peak areas, determination of molar mass distribution and estimation of the core compactness by simultaneous determination of the molar mass and the root mean square (RMS) radius.
