eng Biodiesel: Esterification of Tofa with Methanol by Heterogeneous Catalysis Different acid heterogeneous catalysts were studied for biodiesel production by esterification from Tall oil free fatty acids (TOFA). TOFA is cheaper than conventional sources for biodiesel production, because it is a by-product of the Kraft process. The esterification was processed by methanol at the constant reaction condition (time 8 hours, 120 °C, 24:1 molar ratio methanol/TOFA, 4.7 wt.% catalyst to TOFA and 320 rpm). The acid heterogeneous catalysts SBA-15 and Al-SBA-15 are mesoporous materials with acidic properties and moreover the acidity was improved by support of active components such as Ga2O3, ZnO, ZrO2, ZSM-5, Nb, MoO3, CeO2 or their combinations. The catalyst with zinc is highly active and selective, however was not stable. The catalysts with zirconium are stable, but zirconium decreases the catalytic activity. The best catalyst was Ga2O3-Al-SBA-15 with 88 % conversion and 90 % selectivity. esterification; TOFA; biodiesel; SBA-15
