eng Development of a simple and fast microwave-assisted extraction method for trace element determination in fly ash samples using inductively coupled plasma time-of-flight mass spectrometry The study proposes a novel, interference free and environmentally friendly microwave-assisted extraction-based procedure for the determination of trace elements in fly ash samples by inductively coupled plasma-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF-ICP-MS). The extraction conditions were optimized using a fractional factorial design. Optimum results were obtained when 10 mg of the sample was used followed by microwave-assisted extraction for 10 min with 5 mL of 140 g L-1 NH4F at 200 °C. Calibration against aqueous standards was carried out with rhodium as an internal standard. The method was successfully applied for the quantitative extraction of Li, Be, Ni, As, Se, Rb, Sb, Cs, W, Tl and U. Detection limits ranging from 0.09 to 480 g kg-1 and relative standard deviations lower than 9 % were obtained. The method accuracy was assessed by using two certified reference materials namely Fine Fly Ash CTA-FFA-1 and Constituent Elements in Coal Fly Ash Standard Reference Material 1633b. The proposed method showed to be simple and fast and can be applied for fly ash samples with the elimination of the sample digestion step prior to analysis. This method avoids the use of corrosive and/or toxic analytical reagents like HF, HCl, HClO4 being commonly used during sample preparation of fly as samples and eliminates the formation of different polyatomic species interfering during the TOF-ICP-MS analysis.
