eng Bacterial biofilms - the main ways for characterization and detection This chapter focuses on detecting of pathogenic biofilm. Biofilms are formed by cells which are adhered to the surface. Bacteria in biofilm have an altered phenotype compared to planktonic cells. Biofilm cells are more resistant to external influences compared to planktonic cells. Thereby biofilms should be detected, especially in case of pathogenic bacteria. There are several modern methods for biofilm detection which can be suitable tool. For example, electron microscopy, methods based on polymerase chain reaction, fluorescent in situ hybridization, spectrophotometric detection, atomic force microscopy, culture techniques, etc. are frequently used for biofilm research. However, techniques for the study of bacterial biofilm must be continuously improved. biofilm; pathogenic biofilm; planctonic cells
