eng Ecotoxicity of nanomaterials to soil organisms - ecotoxicity testing in agar-based media Composition of the exposure media and the spiking procedure always affects the behavior of nanomaterials in exposure media. Especially agglomeration and aggregation significantly affect resulting ecotoxicity. Therefore, our effort was focused on development of testing procedure employing such media, which should supposedly suppress the rate of agglomeration and ensure homogeneous distribution of tested nanoparticles in the entire medium volume. Therefore, we decided to replace soil for an agar. Among other advantage of using agar as an exposure medium belongs the possibility of secondary characterization of nanomaterials contrary to soil environment. In pilot experiments ecotoxicity of zinc oxide nanoparticles to the soil annelid Enchytraeus crypticus and to the freshwater oligochaete Lumbriculus varieagatus was tested. In agar medium, we observed higher toxicity compared to soil due to the absence of soil components, which can affect the bioavailability of nanomaterials and their ecotoxicity. In an attempt to mimic the conditions to which nanomaterials are exposed after application into the soil, in subsequent experiments further soil components were added to the agar, namely humic acids and kaolin, both individually and in mixtures.
