eng Quest for stable or masked pnictinidenes: Emerging and exciting class of group 15 compounds The chemistry of low-valent main group compounds represents one of the most exciting and quickly developing areas in the field of organometallic and organoelement chemistry. In this context, this chapter is focused on the chemistry of monomeric pnictogen(I) compounds (R-E) (where E = P, As, Sb and Bi), that are known as pnictinidenes. These compounds are elusive and rather reactive substances. It was not possible to isolate them at ambient conditions for a long time except as complexes with various transition metals. This work summarizes most important results achieved during the quest for their synthesis and characterization as transition metal free species. Their coordination by Lewis bases represents the most frequently used way how to fulfill this challenging task, although unique non-coordinated phosphinidenes emerged recently as well. The structure of such base-stabilized pnictinidenes is more or less perturbed in comparison with their elusive parent non-coordinated originals. Nevertheless, their appearance as relatively easy-handling species opened a way for their future investigation and application as model-compounds for "true" pnictinidenes. stable; masked; pnictinidenes
