eng Coatings based on self-crosslinking latexes containing covalently linked flame retardant and PAMAM denrimer as a crosslinking agent The paper is focused on one-component coatings based on self-crosslinking latexes prepared by semi-continuous emulsion polymerization. Core-shell latex particles included a novel flame retardant as the intra-particle crosslinking agent. The flame retardant hexaallylamino-cyclo-triphosphazene (HAACTP) was covalently linked to other main monomers in the shell structure of latex particles.1 Functionalized latex particles also included in their shell structure diacetone acrylamide to cause a subsequent crosslinking reaction at room temperature. The commercially used adipic acid dihydrazide (ADH) or the alternative crosslinking agent poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) were added in the form of 10 wt.% water solution to the final latex. PAMAM dendrimer was chosen as a more eco-friendly crosslinker. HAACTP decreased flammability of resulting coatings in sense of maximum average rate of heat emission, which was determined by cone-calorimeter combustion.2-3 The prepared latexes with PAMAM dendrimer exhibited a similar long term storage stability and their coatings exhibited high gloss, mechanical and optical properties comparable to ADH-crosslinked coatings. The coatings crosslinked with the eco-friendly PAMAM dendrimer exhibited decreased water absorption and extremely low water whitening index.4-6 Thus, these water based PAMAM-crosslinked latexes are usable as interior coatings for wood, glass and metal substrates.7-8 emulsion copolymers; PAMAM dendrimer; phosphazene; flame retardant
