eng Electrodriven Focusing as a Tool for Improvement of 2D LC Separations The two-dimensional LC separation in-time with on-line coupling of separation dimensions is beneficial for the significantly increased number of compounds, which can be theoretically analyzed and quantified in a single run. For precise quantification of compounds with low concentrations, the excessive band broadening due to the fraction transfer process should be minimized, or the focusing interface can be applied, which usually utilize trapping columns instead of sampling loops. The online preconcentration techniques, which can focus large sample volumes into narrow zones in free solution, are routinely used in electrodriven separations and wide possibilities of preconcentration principles are available. In present work, we have tested the application of electrodriven focusing for the improvement of detection limits of 2D LC technique. We have compared three approaches, (i) the most common comprehensive 2D LC analysis using valve-type interface equipped with sampling loops, (ii) valve equipped with trapping columns and (iii) coupling the interface with electrodriven focusing capillary. The electrodriven focusing induced by the pH changes and complexation phenomena were applied. The benefits of the developed system with respect to the limits of detection and speed of analysis were evaluated using naturally occurring antioxidants and natural food colorants.
