eng Study of Compostable polymer Materials Based on Simple Sugars This paper deals with the synthesis of aqueous polymeric dispersions based on polyvinyl acetate and sucrose by emulsion polymerization. The focus of this study is to covalently link sucrose units to polymer chains and thereby increase their biodegradability. The reaction takes place in an alkaline environment, which is important for the activation of sugar molecules in terms of their conversion to the polymerization-capable endiol form. In the alkaline environment, during the polymerization, hydrolysis of polyvinyl acetate takes place resulting in polyvinyl alcohol, which is a conventional biopolymer. The experiment focused on the study of an optimum ratio between the polymer and sucrose so that the final emulsion polymer exhibited a good solubility in water, sufficient adhesion to various substrates and humidity resistence. The use of these emulsion polymers with enhanced biodegradability may be in the field of the encapsulation fertilizers providing their controlled release or in the field of eco-friendly adhesives for paper intended for biological recycling. biodegradable latex; emulsion polymerization; sucrose
