eng Structure and properties of niobium zinc-metaphosphate The main aim of this work was to study the influence of niobium (as a transition metal with high valence) on the structure and several properties of zinc metaphosphate glasses. The metaphosphate glass composition was chosen because of its excellent glassforming abillity. From the technologically point of view the niobium phosphate glasses are of interest for their wide optical applications, as bioglasses and as potential hosts of for radioactive wastes. The two compositional lines with the metaphosphate composition were prepared by conventional melt–quenching method, one of the general formula xNb2O5–(50-3x)ZnO–(50+2x)P2O5 (compositional line from zinc metaphosphate to niobium(V) metaphosphate) and xNb2O5–(50-2x)ZnO–(50+x)P2O5 (zinc metaphosphate to niobyl(3+) metaphosphate). The glasses were homogenous and characterized by compositional dependencies of density, microhardness, glass transition temperature, and thermal expansion coefficient. The structure was studied using Raman, 31P MAS and static NMR and ESR spectroscopy. phosphate glasses; niobium, structure; Raman spectroscopy; 31P MAS NMR
