eng Thermal Behavior of Chalcogenide Glasses Chalcogenide glasses belong among the technologically very important materials. Their utilization ranges from infrared optics applications (where high infrared transmittance together with very good glass-forming ability is employed) to phase-change optical/electrical data-recording (where ultrafast crystallization and distinct properties of the amorphous and crystalline phases are utilized). Since most industrial and research applications of chalcogenide materials require advanced thermal treatment, knowledge of their thermal properties is of critical importance for both materials scientists and application engineers. Basic thermal characterization studies provide data on glass stability, workability, and glass-forming ability; structural relaxation studies give information about the long-term stability of the materials; heat capacity measurements allow determination of thermodynamic quantities; and knowledge of crystallization kinetics enables production of semicrystalline materials and ceramics with a defined magnitude of crystals, and it can also be directly utilized for search and tailoring of new phase-change materials. In the present chapter, some of the recent advancements regarding the measurement of thermal properties of chalcogenide glasses will be reviewed. Emphasis will be put on the contribution of thermoanalytical techniques to detailed kinetic studies of glass transition and cold crystallization behavior. Apart from the review of the theoretical background and methodological approaches, several example studies will be introduced to demonstrate the specificity of chalcogenide glassy materials.
