eng Nitrogen Heteroaromates for Redox Flow Batteries Redox-flow batteries (RFBs) represent cost-effective stationary storage of renewable energy accumulated from wind and photovoltaics. In general, RFB requires an redox active electrolyte, preferably organic and soluble in aqueous media. Inspired by viologen, a series of novel, nitrogen-based, redox-active, and water-soluble heteroaromates have been designed and prepared. The structural tuning involves variation of the parent heteroaromate (pyridine/pyrimidine/phenantroline) followed by quaternization. The synthesis, fundamental electrochemical properties and prospective performance in RFB will be discussed. Redox-flow batteries; Nitrogen Heteroaromates; Pyridine; Pyrimidine; Phenantroline
