eng OXO-VANADIUM COMPLEXES OF DITHIOCARBAMATES AS AN ALTERNATIVE DRIERS FOR ALKYD RESINS Saturated polyesters modified with triglycerides of polyunsaturated fatty acids synthetized from renewable sources, called alkyd resins, are incessantly subjects of interest for several studies. Briefly, alkyd resins belong to group of binders crosslinked by oxo-polymerization of fatty acids chains containing sensitive C–H bonds on bis-allylic moiety. Therefore, film-forming process is ensured by autoxidation process catalysed by driers. These catalysts are usually transition metal complexes able to undergo oxidation changes. Most common drier used in paint industry is cobalt 2-ethylhexanoate. On the other hand, acknowledge studies determined the toxic properties of cobalt(II) compounds. Current situation leads to a general attempt to find satisfactory replacement. Transition metal dithiocarbamate complexes are used worldwide over the last 50 years for their fungicidal, pesticidal and insecticidal properties. In this study, vanadium-based dithiocarbamate complexes were found to be suitable driers accelerating curing process of several different alkyd resins. The drying activity of tested formulations was primarily described by mechanical methods (determination of drying times by BK method according to ASTM D5895, relative film hardness by pendulum hardness tester according to ISO 1522) and kinetic parameters were determined by FTIR-ATR spectroscopy. alkyd
