eng Improved mechanical properties of new hybrid UV curable varnish for inkjet printing The aim of this work was to develop UV curable varnish for inkjet printing that can be partially cured by UV LEDs operating at 395 nm (for creating of 3D effects). Final curing of prepared UV curable varnish is achieved using medium pressure mercury lamp. The prepared UV varnish polymerized by hybrid mechanism (simultaneously free radical and cationic polymerization). The formulated varnish was printed on commercially available DOD inkjet machine (with dry layer thickness of 20 and 40 μm). Mechanical properties of the prepared UV curable varnish samples and the commercially available ones were compared. Namely, the study included evaluation of adhesion by the Tape test, quality of the varnish layer with respect to cutting and grooving, and elasticity/adhesion of grooved varnish layer after folding (180°). Results showed that developed UV curable varnish has better adhesion and elasticity than the commercially available ones.
