eng Sol-gel synthesis and upconversion properties of nanocrystalline Er3 -doped Yb3Ga5O12 (RE = Er3 , Ho3 ) Nanocrystalline oxide of composition Yb3Ga5O12 belongs to the family of materials with garnet-related structure. It is a promising material with potential applications in the field of photonics when doped by lanthanides such as Er3+ or Ho3+. High content of Yb3+ ions in the Yb15−xErxGa25O60 and Yb15−xHoxGa25O60 hosts allows efficient excitation using ≈980 nm laser. This leads to sensitized energy transfer upconversion photoluminescence emission in visible region. Nanophosphors of compositions Yb15−xErxGa25O60 and Yb15−xHoxGa25O60 (with x = 0; 0.01; 0.1; 0.5; 1; 2) were prepared by sol-gel combustion technique using citric acid as chelation agent. Phase composition and morphology of annealed products were examined by X-ray diffraction and by scanning electron microscopy. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy was used for determination of absorption bands associated with the presence of lanthanide ions. Energy transfer from Yb3+ to Er3+/Ho3+ ions is provided by photoluminescence spectroscopy leading to dominant red/green emission bands. Possible upconversion mechanisms are proposed using energy level diagrams.
