eng	Comparison of biological effects of inorganic fibers and nanoparticles in pulmonary cells A549	Recently, the development and production of new materials of unique morphology, including fibers or nanofibers, have been increasing. Along with their use, the request on evaluation of their biological, or toxic effects is emerging. Respiratory tract is the most frequent localization of entering materials into the human body implying the importance to estimate potential pulmonary toxicity in newly synthesized materials. Our aim was to characterize the biological effects of two types of inorganic fibers produced by centrifugal spinning in human lung cell line. In addition, we aimed to compare their biological effects with commercial nanoparticles of same chemical composition. We used human lung carcinoma epithelial cells A549 which were exposed to SiO2/TiO2 fibers and nanoparticles at concentrations 0 100 μg.mL 1 for 24 and 48 h. Cell damage after treatment was assessed by a cell viability test and using the glutathione assay. The results showed that SiO2 fibers did not induce significant decrease in both cell viability and glutathione levels after treatment. After 48 h, only 100 μg.mL-1 SiO2 nanoparticles caused significant reduction of cell viability in comparison with untreated cells. On the other hand, TiO2 fibers induced similar impairment of A549 cells in comparison with TiO2 nanoparticles after 24 and 48 h. In general, we conclude that herein tested inorganic fibers do not possess larger toxicity risk in human pulmonary A549 cells in comparison to nanoparticles of the same chemical composition.
