eng Guanidinate Complexes of Early Transition Metals as Effective Catalysts for Ethylene Polymerization Guanidinates (anionic form of guanidines) have earned attention in recent years as convenient ligands thanks to their outstanding ability to stabilize the central atom sterically and electronically in the complexes.1,2 Adaptation of their steric hindrance and electronic properties is achieved via variation of substituents on nitrogen atoms of the N3C core. Their donor properties and diversity of coordination modes make them compatible with virtually any metal or non-metal element.3,4 Compounds combining hybrid guanidinate and cyclopentadienyl ligand with transition metals as central atoms are expected to have catalytic activity in C-C bond formation reactions. Study of ethylene polymerization was performed initiated by titanium guanidinate complex GTiCpCl2 (Fig. 1). The catalyst was activated with either methylaluminoxane, or aluminum-free system B(C6F5)3/Et3SiH.5 Reference polymerization assays were performed with CpTiCl3 systems. The GTiCpCl2/B(C6F5)3/Et3SiH catalyst system provided remarkable results - linear polyethylene with a high molecular weight and a narrow dispersion of 2.0, in contrast to the product from the reference system with a multimodal distribution of 20.5. The final product is comparable with high density polyethylene according to FTIR measurements. This work is motivated by finding the correct combination of organic ligands and metals, reagents, and reaction conditions to explore new classes of compounds bringing progress to many sophisticated areas of chemistry.
