eng Bi(hetero)aryls Prepared Via Photoredox Cross-Coupling Bi(hetero)aryls, essential structural units in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, organic electronics and photonic materials, are prepared mainly by transition metal-mediated cross-coupling reactions. In contrast to this, a metal-free, photochemical, inexpensive and environmentally acceptable C-C reaction has been developed in our lab. The visible light-initiated construction of the C-C bond utilizes (hetero)aryl halides such as substituted benzene, pyri(mi)dine, imidazole, thiazole and oxazole with suitable radical trap (e.g. 1H-pyrrole, N-methylpyrrole, pyridine or 1,1´-diphenylethene). Three structurally analogous dicyanopyrazine (DPZ) derivatives were screened as photocatalysts. The contribution will focus on the catalytic performance of these catalysts and a plausible reaction mechanism deduced from a series of blank experiment, UV-Vis absorption/emission spectra, transient absorption spectra, electrochemical data corroborated by quantum-chemical calculations. dicyanopyrazine; photocatalysis; cross-coupling
