eng Umpolung of polyhedral carboranes: Complexes of typical Lewis acids as base catalysts The group of boranes and heteroboranes has been known for more than a century and it has been extensively studied during the last decades.1 Their structure is dominated by electronically deficient bonds, which predetermines them to favor neutral and anionic forms. They also react easily with nuclephiles to make zwitterionic complexes or eliminate protons. Recently,2 we published a series of neutral adducts of N-heterocyclic carbenes with carboranes which are able to intercept proton of a strong acid to form thermally robust cationic boranes. However, these compounds are able to activate much weaker acids. In this work, the synthesis of heteroborane-carbene complexes will be described as well as their subsequent reactivity with C-, N- and O-acids. Finally, the utilization of these compounds in base catalysis will be discussed as well.
