The group of heavy metals includes essential elements necessary for the proper function of human metabolism, such as copper, selenium and zinc. But it also includes metals that pose a risk of toxicity to the human body, such as arsenic, lead, cadmium and mercury, which can damage the kidney, liver, lung, or brain. Especially in neural cells, cadmium and mercury can induce functional and morphological changes. These heavy metals are widespread in the environment, it is essential to study their biological effects [1]. We aimed to characterize the biological effects of ZnCl2, CdCl2 and HgCl2 on glutathione levels [2] and dehydrogenase activity in the SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cell line. Cells were exposed to ZnCl2, CdCl2 and HgCl2 for 6 and 24 h. In addition, changes in cell morphology after the treatment were observed using fluorescence microscopy. We found changes in dehydrogenase activity and glutathione levels after 6 and 24 h of incubation with CdCl2 and HgCl2. After 24 h, we found a transient increase of glutathione levels in cells treated with the lowest tested concentrations 1 µM HgCl2 and 5 µM CdCl2. In conclusion, our results showed that HgCl2 induced a larger impairment of neural cells compared to CdCl2.	heavy metals; SH-SY5Y cell line
