eng Steady-state Balances of Wet End of Paper Machine A model representing a wet end network of machine-glazed paper mill has been developed under steady state conditions. This study focuses on the detailed steady-state mass balances. The wet end is a complex network that interconnects all the pulp preparation equipment and the forming section of the paper machine. Control of the wet end white water network in a highly closed integrated paper mill is a difficult task. The complex configuration of the network promotes interactions between the large number of variables involved. The all system comprised more than 60 streams, and nearly 40 technological nodes. The pulp and white water streams have been modelled by a two-component system, namely water and fibres. Mass balance calculations give a review of the individual streams with respect to their volumetric flow rates, as well as to mass flow rates of total solids in given stream. The validity of calculated values depends mainly upon the accuracy of the measurements under process conditions. It is worth mentioning that the some process data have been measured very inaccurately, e. g., some volumetric flow rates were estimated from characteristic curves of pumps. The results obtained can be used to improve performance, to save energy, and to minimize the impact on the environment. Paper machine; wet end; steady-state mass balance
