eng Comprehensive Two-dimensional Liquid Chromatography: Comparison of Different Second Dimension Gradients The main purpose of comprehensive LCxLC Techniques is increasing the number of separated compounds, i.e., The peak capacity. Gradients run simultaneously in the first ¬and in the second dimension of a ¬comprehensive LCxLC system¬. The gradients were applied in orthogonal LCxLC separations of phenolic acids and flavones on a polyethylene glycol (PEG) column in the first dimension and two types of porous shell fused core C18 columns in the second dimension (Ascentis Express 2.7 μm and Kinetex 2.6 μm). Second dimension gradient is limited to a short time period available for separation. Porous shell particle provide fast efficient separations at high flow rates, moderate column pressures and allow decrease of the second dimension separation time and important saving of the overall time of analysis. The effects of the gradient type on the bandwidths, theoretical peak capacity, separation time, and column pressure in the second dimension were investigated.
