eng Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect of statin therapy in patients with advanced coronary artery disease The impact of statin therapy on the level of systemic inflammation and oxidative stress in patients with advanced coronary artery disease (CAD) was evaluated. Study included a group of patients with advanced CAD (n=91) and control. In stenosis group, 60 patients were subjected to statin treatment for more than 6 months with either simvastatin (n=29) or atorvastatin (n=31) and 31 patients were not treated with statins. Oxidative stress markers: malondialdehyde (MDA) was determined by HPLC. Concentrations of high sensitive C-reactive protein, interleukin-6 were determined by standard procedures. Patients with CAD and undergoing statin therapy exhibited lower levels of LDL-cholesterol, coinciding with lower levels of inflammation as well as of oxidative stress in comparison with patients without statin therapy (S2). Besides LDL lowering effect, statin therapy has been shown to have also significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. statin; atherosclerosis
