eng SYNTHESIS OF OPTICALLY ACTIVE BENZO[d]IMIDAZOLE DERIVATIVES FROM α-AMINO ACIDS A five step reaction sequence leading to the synthesis of new α-amino acid-derived benzimidazoles has been carried out. This project represents continuation of our recent research on optically active imidazole derivatives.1-3 In the present study, novel benzo[d]imidazole derivatives were synthesized as optically active amines. They can be utilized as precursors for the synthesis of higher heterocyclic systems or can be employed as nitrogen ligands in a selected asymmetric reaction. Commercially available and inexpensive essential α-amino acids were chosen as a source of chirality to make the entire synthesis low-cost. The α-amino acids such as L-Ala, D-Ala, L,D-Ala, L-Leu, L-iLeu, L-Phe, L-Val, and L-Pro were utilized in this reaction. benzo[d]imidazoles; α-amino acid; ligand
