Layered zirconium organophosphonates functionalized with acidic groups represent an alternative to widely used clay minerals as host materials for intercalation reactions. Here, we report the preparation and characterization of a series of new intercalation compounds based on mixed zirconium 4 sulfophenylphosphonate organophosphonate as a host material. An interesting and unexpected feature of these compounds is their ability to incorporate mineral acids in their interlayer space, for instance phosphoric acid.	metal phosphonate; layered phosphates; intercalation
