eng Effect of natural substances on bacteria contaminating boar semen INTRODUCTION The aim of our study was to determine minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) of natural substances (Carvacrol, Eugenol, Thymol, Cnicin, Cymene, Gallic acid, Ethylgallate) and their mutual combination. MATERIAL AND METHODS Single substances or their combinations were dissolved in 24% ethanol solution in phosphate buffered saline. Bacterial strains including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus hyicus, Proteus vulgaris and Escherichia coli were isolated from boar semen. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The most effective natural extracts used as a pure component were Thymol (MBC 300 – 1200 µg/ml) and Cnicin (MBC 600 – 1200 µg/ml). Combinations Carvacrol + Cnicin (MBC 600 + 300 µg/ml, Thymol + Cnicin (MBC 600 + 300 µg/ml) and Thymol + Gallic acid (MBC 300 + 600 µg/ml) were the most effective combinations used. CONCLUSSIONS The increasing number of resistant microorganisms is consequence of frequent antibiotic use not merely for therapeutic purposes. One of possible approaches to solution of this important problem is utilization of natural extracts as a source of antimicrobial compounds.
