Removal of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs by photocatalytic processes from surface waters

eng Removal of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs by photocatalytic processes from surface waters Diclofenac and naproxen (500 μg/L) were removed by heterogeneous photocatalysis from model samples. As a source of UV, the UV-LED diodes Luminus with a peak emmision of 365 nm were used. 0.5 g/L of TiO2 (AV-01, Precheza) was used as a catalyst. Also the influence of hydrogen peroxide H2O2 or pH adjustment were explored. Photocatalytic processes showed good results in diclofenac and naproxen removal. These values varied from 80 to almost 98 % for naproxen and diclofenac. Removal rate was also enhanced by H2O2 addition or acidic pH conditions. Although good results were obtained in photocatalytic processes, the feasibility of this method on real waters was investigated. Samples from surface river water were obtained from Labe, Pardubice, during March 2016. Samples were purified and preconcentrated because of detection of pharmaceutical residues in these types of waters. For preconcentration, SPE manifold (Macherey-Nagel) and OASIS HLB (Waters) 6 mg sorbents was used. Spiked surface water samples were treated by heterogeneous photocatalysis. Also, the influence of hydrogen peroxide H2O2 and pH adjustment were explored as well.
