eng Major role of water in HPLC of polar analytes The correct adjustment of the mobile phase is equally important as the selection of the appropriate column for the separation of polar compounds in HPLC. Both non-specific and selective polar interactions control the retention in the reverse-phase (RP) an HILIC modes used in the contemporary HPLC practice. The chemometric and predictive calculation algorithms based on the theoretical models of the retention are very useful tools for the selection of the optimum separation conditions for various samples. However, for the correct applications of the theoretical models, the good quality of the experimental data used for the determination of the model parameters is essential. liquid chromatography; RP; HILIC; water adsorption; dual retention mechanism
