eng THE POSSIBILITIES OF HYDRODEBROMATION OF PESTICIDE BROMOXYNIL IN AQUEOUS SOLUTION BY COPPER-BASED MATERIALS Pesticides became an important component of worldwide agriculture systems during the last century, allowing for an increase in food production. However, it is well known that pesticides residues spread in the environment, causing contamination of ecosystems. The presence of pesticides in ecosystems is problematic, because some pesticides, especially halogenated ones, are persistent and may cause potential toxic effects on non-target organisms including humans [1]. Bromoxynil (BRX) is an herbicide that is used for the control of broad-leaves weeds. It is approved in almost all the European countries, listed as a highly hazardous chemical and classified as toxic for the reproduction. Residues of BRX were found in soil and surface water, even in groundwater. In water, it is likely to pose health hazards to non-target aquatic organisms [2]. Following toxicity of pesticides representation by Bromoxynil, studying its effective degradation to the readily biodegradable products is desired. Copper catalysed reductive treatment using hydrodebromation plays important role in detoxification of polybrominated aromatic contaminants such as BRX [2,3]. This contribution deals with modification of the reaction conditions necessary for the complete hydrodebromation of BRX by copper-based materials. This study also compares effect of copper, copper compounds and copper alloys on the hydrodebromation of Bromoxynil. water treatment; herbicide; dehalogenation
