eng New UV LED curable inkjet varnishes with enhanced mechanical properties We have prepared UV curable varnishes for inkjet printing that can be cured by UV LEDs operating between 365 and 395 nm. The UV LED curable varnishes are suitable for full-surface varnishing and for spot varnishing too. With an appropriate printing machine, it is possible to create 3D varnish structures in the range of tens/hundreds of micrometers. Printing properties of the prepared varnishes were tested on a commercially available inkjet varnishing machine with a dry layer thickness 20 and 40 μm. Mechanical properties of the prepared UV curable varnish samples and the commercially available ones were compared. Namely, the study included the evaluation of adhesion by the Tape test, quality of the varnish layer with respect to cutting and grooving, and elasticity/adhesion of grooved varnish layers after folding (180°). Other studied properties were dynamic viscosity, surface free energy, printability, long-term stability (shelf-live), varnish stability in printing heads, and yellowness. Results showed that the prepared UV LED curable varnish has very good elasticity and high adhesion to various printed substrates even with polymers. This enables further trouble-free mechanical processing of the varnished products, such as cutting, grooving, bending, etc. UV LED; UV curing; varnish; inkjet; mechanical properties
