eng Thiophene-Diazinium Electrolytes for Redox-Flow Batteries Owing to the current energetic crisis, storage of electrical energy produced from renewable sources is an extremely important task. Fluctuating electricity production is one of the biggest disadvantages of photovoltaics and wind farms. Due to their low cost, low environmental impact and large capacity, redox flow batteries (RFBs) represent an interesting option to solve fluctuating electricity production and energy-storage problems. Both catholyte and anolyte used in RFBs should meet three principal conditions: (i) a reversible redox process, (ii) (electro)chemical stability and (iii) water solubility. To fulfil these assumptions, we have designed three target molecules 1–3 to be used as water-soluble organic electrolytes. They contain a conjugated system of multiple bonds, 2,5-thienylene central scaffold and two pyridinium redox centers. Propylsulfonato residues R were used to gain zwitterionic structure via N-quaternization. Two of designed molecules 1 and 3 were prepared, whereas compound 2 underwent facile polymerization of the embedded double bonds, which prevented its isolation. The successfully prepared salts were fully spectrally characterized and further studied by cyclic voltammetry and water-solubility testing. These outcomes are to be discussed in the contribution. redox flow batteries; pyridinium salt; N-quaternization; 2,5-thienylene;
