eng TOWARDS BIMETALLIC CATALYSTS FOR ROP OF LACTIDE: COACHING A BIGUANIDE-LIKE SYSTEM In the past decade(s), increasing departure from expensive transition metals led to an interest in cheaper elements and/or main group metal-based catalysts.1 As highly versatile N-donor ligands, guanidinates have been reported to support many elements of the periodic system.2 More so, a number of zinc3 and aluminum4 guanidinates have been successfully used in ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters, a promising field of sustainable materials offering an alternative to petrochemical plastics5. The focus of our work builds on an intriguing ligand system of biguanide-like guanidinate capable of several coordination arrangements when anchoring two metal centers (Figure 1), thus allowing for heterobimetallic species with potential cooperative effect-polymerization6 mechanism. The structure of mono- and bimetallic complexes in relation to catalytic activity in ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of rac-lactide was therefore studied in detail and utilized in the synthesis of novel, highly active species.
