eng Heteroatom Doped Push-Pull Chromophores: Old Friends with New Tricks Due to their manifold and newly-appearing applications, organic push-pull chromophores steadily attract scientific and industrial attention. In principle, their fundamental properties are dictated by the extent of the intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) among the used D-A couple through a pi-system. The D-pi-A arrangement accounts for their facile property tuning via structural variation of the particular D-, A- and pi-moieties. Besides the conjugated carbon backbone, an embedding of heteroatoms brings pronounced polarization, reduced HOMO–LUMO gap, altered redox properties, red-shifted/enhanced (non)linear optical properties and available coordination/anchoring site. Heteroatoms can be employed either in the electron-withdrawing/donating units or/and as a part of the pi-linker. The present talk will address fundamental principles and structural aspects of A-, D- and pi-tuning and branching of push-pull chromophores, followed by their applications across nonlinear optics, two-photon absorbers, molecular switches, sensors and photoredox catalysis. push-pull chromophores; nonlinear optics; two-photon absorbers; photoredox catalysis; molecular switches
