eng Cyano-capped π-systems π-Conjugated molecules, and especially those polarized by electron-donating/withdrawing substituents, steadily attract attention due to their peculiar properties dictated mostly by intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT). Strong cyano acceptor (σ = 0.66) with linear arrangement is popularly employed in construction of push-pull chromophores. For instance, dicyanovinyl moiety can be easily introduced to construct cyanoethynylethenes (CEEs) with third-order nonlinear optical activity or butterfly-shaped tetracyanoanthraquinodimethanes (TCAQs). More recently, we have reported (hetero)aromatic dicyano-substituted moieties such as dicyanobenzene (DCB), dicyanopyrazine (DCP) to gain X-shaped push-pull chromophores with noticeable second-order nonlinear optical activity and various tripodal triphenylamines feat. tunable two-photon absorbtion. Further structural modification of DCP led to DPZ derivative, which proved to be very powerful organic photocatalyst capable to initiate variety of valuable organic photoredox transformations. Shrinking the six-membered (hetero)cycle of DCP/DCB affords DCI, which has been used as a model electron-withdrawing moiety to demonstrated fundamental aspects of property tuning in push-pull molecules and subsequently as a pH-induced NLO swich or molecular sensors of various analytes such as heavy metals and nerve gases. push-pull chromophores; dicyanobenzene; dicyanopyrazine; triphenylamine; two-photon absorbtion
