eng Plasma Concentration of Vitamin E in Selected Groups of Seniors in the Czech Republic Background: Antioxidant vitamins have long-term effects in diminishing of the harmful effects of reactive oxygen species, especially during atherosclerosis progression. Aim: To estimate plasma concentration of alpha-tocopherol in selected groups of patients in the age over 65 years. Methods: Studied groups included 30 patients with diabetes mellitus (DM, middle age 72.7 years); 30 patients 1 ? 3 weeks after acute myocardial infarction (AMI, middle age 73.1 years); 15 patients with lipid metabolism disorder (LD, total cholesterol > 6.2 mM, middle age 75.7 years); and control group of 30 health persons (middle age 77.6 years). Plasma concentration of alpha-tocopherol was determined by HPLC. Statistical method: t-test, ADSTAT. Results: Plasma concentration of alpha-tocopherol in DM group was 14.6 +- 5.3 microM, in AMI group 13.7 5.6 microM, in LD group 15.9 +- 5.6 microM and in control group 12.9 +- 4.1 microM. No statistically significant differences were found. However, comparison of these values with levels recommended for prevention of cardiovascular diseases and cancer reveals remarkable shortage of alpha-tocopherol in the Czech population. Conclusion: Seniors in the Czech population were proved to be in shortage of alpha-tocopherol. Vitamin E; senior patients; HPLC
