eng Inverse correlation between b-carotene plasma levels and markers of inflammation in patients with advanced coronary artery disease The aim of study was to determine relation between plasma concentrations of b-carotene and a-tocopherol, the level of systemic inflammation and oxidative stress in patients with advanced coronary artery disease (CAD). Oxidative stress parameters were determined in patients with CAD (at least 50% stenosis of the main coronary artery according to coronarographic examination; S, n=91) and control patients with normal coronarographic status; (C, n=49). Plasma levels of -carotene, -tocopherol and malondialdehyde (MDA) were determined by HPLC; C-reactive protein (hsCRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-ch, LDL-ch, fibrinogen by standard procedures. In patients with coronary stenosis (S) lower levels of -carotene (BC) and -tocopherol (AT) coincided with higher level of inflammation. BC: S: 0.110.10 mol/l vs C: 0.140.08 mol/l (p0.05); AT: S: 22.066.52 mol/l vs C: 23.755.95 (p>0.05); IL-6: S: 5.753.55 ng/l vs C: 3.922.76 ng/l (p0.001). The inverse correlation between -carotene and IL-6 (correlation coefficient 0.28, p0.05) was found in patients with CAD. -carotene was inversely proportional also to hsCRP, MDA, free radicals, but the differences did not reach significancy. The inverse relation indicates potential protective effect of -carotene on atherosclerosis due inhibition of inflammatory processes. b-carotene; inflammation; coronary artery disease
