eng A Comparison of the Effect of ?Hard? Comonomers Styrene and Methyl Methacrylate on the Ethyl Acrylate/Methacrylic Acid Latex Alkali Swellability Series ofemulsion copolymers were synthesized comprising copolymerized methacrylic acid in the in constant level of 10 wt.% ethyl acrylate as a "soft" comonomer and different levels of methyl methylmethacrylate or styrene as "hard" comonomers. It was shown that the extent of particle swelling and hydroplasticization was affected by the "hard" comonomer content and its polyrity. The effect of dissociated carboxylic groups on increasing the latex viscosity and lowering its minimum film forming temperature was much more pronounced in the case of methyl methacrylate copolymers in that the polymer chains were more polar. acrylic latex;styrene-acrylic latex;latex viscosity;alkali-swellable latex;hydroplasticization;film formation
