eng Mass Spectrometry Based Methods in Lipid Cancer Biomarker Research Tumor cells and normal cells have different proteomic, metabolomic and lipidomic composition. Lipids are major building blocks of membranes of cells and intracellular compartments and they also fulfil numerous crucial cell functions. Their dysregulation is related with some serious human diseases including cancer. In our research we demonstrated that the lipidomic composition of tumor and normal cell lines shows statistically significant differences for several tumor types, differences are also found in tumor and normal tissues for breast and kidney cancer and confirmed on lipidomic changes of plasma samples of inbred mice. The last and the most difficult step is the search for statistically relevant lipidomic differences for human body fluids suitable for early diagnosis, such as plasma, erythrocytes or urine. This research requires high-throughput, robust and validated mass spectrometry based methods for the quantitation of large number of lipids from multiple lipid categories and classes.
