eng Potential of Mixed Oxides as Catalyst for Methyl Ester (Biodiesel) Production The structure of synthesized hydrotalcite and mixed oxides was confirmed by XRD by characteristic diffraction lines. The molar ratio of Mg-Fe was determined by two independent methods: XRF and Atomic absorption spectroscopy and results were compared. The amount of Fe2O3 in the mixed oxides, which is undesirable and can influent the catalyst activity, was indicated according to UVVIS analysis. The highest amount was found in the mixed oxides with molar ratio 1:1 and 2:1, while in the other oxides it was insignificant. The lowest conversion of transesterification (40-45 %) has catalyst in the molar ratio 1:1 and 1:2, which correspond with the high amount of Fe2O3. On the other hand, higher molar ratio Mg/Fe (5:1 and 6:1) means more non-bound MgO (confirmed by XRD), which decreases the catalyst activity. The highest conversion had the catalyst with molar ratio Mg/Fe 4:1. The catalyst stability, which is important for its use in next steps, was determined by analysis of both metals in the reaction mixture. It was shown; that leaching of magnesium is less than 2 % and leaching of iron is insignificant – catalyst was stable. Mixed oxides; Catalyst; Methyl ester; Biodiesel
